For a long time the merits and demerits of alcohol consumption during pregnancy have been debated in medical circles and among the maternal and child health experts. Though many say that an occasional glass of wine might not do much harm to the baby, and lift the mood of the mother, there is always the risk of having a bit too much. Remember that if you cross that line your baby has to pay the price of your ignorance. Since no one knows exactly how much of alcohol consumption is safe, it is wise to give up on alcohol completely.
This is because some recent studies have suggested that the over consumption of alcohol can impair the mental and physical development of the fetus in what is known as fetal alcohol syndrome. This can affect the growth and development of the baby leading to facial anomalies, mental retardation, behavioral issues and reduced the size of the fetus among others.
